Opt-Out...of FACEBOOK

Yesterday while listening to music on Pandora, I noticed at the bottom of the screen that my co-worker "liked" a song I was listening to. Naturally, as I am never one to turn down a semi-creeper, stalkerish, opportunity, I emailed her the following : "Pandora just told me that you like the song "Say it Right" by Nelly Furtado...I feel like this new thing on Pandora is TMI...but it IS a great song :)".

Before you go thinking I am stalking some rando in my office, let me just point out that only 5 people work here, and only 2 are not bosses, so I know my two co-workers pretty well.
Anyway, she responded, "That's creepy...I checked that (this means she clicked that she liked it) like 30 minutes ago".
I then replied: "I am now listening to it...staring at a picture of you on a motorcycle (her FBook picture...AWKWARD)....OHHHH silly technological “improvements”."
She then said:  "Whoa how does that even happen?  FB?... I feel kind of violated, particularly as it won’t let me view any of my settings :(".

Yes, my brief unnecessary stalker moment taught me that Facebook publishes what music you are listening to to your Facebook friends. Instead of asking you if this is OK, Facebook has an "opt-out" policy for giving away this information, like they did with publishing your information to Google, and, this realization has reiterated to me how CREEPY the new Facebook is and how much I hate how they just keep adding things all secretively. The only other reason I have heard of an opt-out policy is for organ donation, and since even for this bioethical concept, the US does not abide by such a policy, I am pretty sure Facebook should not work this way either (change your privacy settings to stop it). While I might sometimes ask my best friends for music selections, I prefer to be asked for mine (and probably do not need people to know what music--cough cough Britney--gets me through the work day). Invasion of privacy aside, in all honesty, I really do not care to know that my biology lab partner from freshman year likes Justin Timberlake's Cry Me a River. But, Gee thanks Facebook.
