Because of my friend's google buzz alerts, I have got into reading this site, which I like because it shows the positive things in people's life and not just the shitty/drunken ones (and someone told me to be more positive, or at least speak more positively on here once in a while). This weekend I had three moments of win, the kind of win where I definitely knocked things off my list of things to do this year, if not my list of things to do before I die.
Win #1: My mom visited and we saw the cherry blossoms. To be honest, if you put up a picture of a dogwood and a cherry blossom tree, I would NOT know the difference. However, spending an hour and half cruising around the water, while some guy told me all about the trees, the monuments, and the memorials was an AWESOME use of my time (especially since the weather was finally nice). It was also the Kite festival and seeing hundreds of kites flying in the air around the Washington Monument was definitely a declaration of SPRING TIME (and made me want to start singing that song from Mary Poppins- "Let's Go Fly a KITE"- and dancing giddily around). As someone who hates the winter, I consider this entire day a celebration of my impending future happiness and was super stoked that nature (and the thousands of other people all of the sudden outside) agreed with me. Oh, and it did not hurt that my mom was visiting to celebrate with me!
Win #2: I saw Chelsea Handler perform live, got her autograph, AND we "sort of" talked. Ever since my roommates and I got into watching Chelsea Lately religiously last year, I now DVR every episode, and continually laugh out loud when I am watching it. I also have read both of her old books and as my travel partner this summer can attest, these also made me crack up, inappropriately, and often in the middle of the night on sleeper trains (but hey, laughing is better than being the couple sharing a twin train bed with people sleeping above and below you...oh yes, that happened). Anyway, because I consider myself to be a huge fan, I was SO stoked that she was touring the US and even more excited that she chose to come to DC and I did not have to go to NYC to see her (as I had originally planned when this was announced). Being a fan had its' perks, like I knew the password to get the fan club seats at the show (see the picture, I was close), and going to the show was ABSOLUTELY worth it, as Chelsea's standup and her opener Heather McDonald's were just as funny as I had hoped. True, sitting next to my mother while Chelsea talked about female masturbation for 20 minutes was a little awkward, but, luckily my mom, like me, loves to laugh and has a great sense of humor (which she blames on being a product of the 70s and living in the first generation to use the word "Fuck"...and mean it). After the show, Chelsea (being amazing to her fans) stayed to sign all of the books of people who bought her new one (this was a double win for me as I had decided earlier not to go to her Boarders' book signing and regretted my decision). Since people were shuffled in and out SO fast to meet her, I spent my time in line thinking pretty hard about what to say in my one second in front of her. I decided, lord knows why, to bring up something she said in her comedy routine about signing books to people with weirdly spelled names. She explained how she often spelled them wrong, and then she would get yelled at by the people about HER spelling even though it was really them, and not her, that "spelled the name wrong". After she signed my book, I said to her, "Man, I thought you were going to rip on me for spelling my name weird"--Side note, I just have a common name that I shortened to a nickname spelled differently than most people-- and she responded "(my name) no, thats normal, that's a good name, not fucked up like most peoples". Yes, that was the gist of my convo, but in the words of one of the best cheesy romantic scenes in a movie (WATCH Love Actually- the "carolers"), it was...ENOUGH.
Win #3: I received a text worthy of being posted on TFLN. After another epic game night at my friends' place (one that included a beer tasting), I had another great night out in Adam's Morgan (where we are still number 2 of all time in photo hunt). Since my mom was in town, I did not stay out too late and left early as to not wake her or be unable to move the next day. While I have received TFLN quality texts in the past, I discovered that since the site started to be popular, my funny texts ended (I think this had to do with growing up and out of college...sadly). But, just when I thought I would have to continue to live vicariously through other people's funny texts, I woke up around 8 am to this message:
"What did you end up doing the rest of the night? I'm on green line metro and dont know why".
My thoughts about this text are best expressed in one word....A-MAZING.
